How about body parts and machinery stay separate?

Alternatively, while I know how many times a piston goes up and down per second, even at idle, seeing it happen makes me feel bad about doing more than 1000 rpm.

Given that flatheads loved to overheat and eat cylinder head gaskets for breakfast only slightly less than Audis of a certain vintage eat  timing chain guides it’s sort of a feature when you think about it.

This feels... forbidden somehow. Like you’re not supposed to be able to see this part of a running engine  without some kind of damage occurring... or at least oil splashing everywhere.

Flatheads are neat!

I imagine you couldn’t leave it running like that for more than the few seconds in the video

After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time:

I’ll see your VCM , H onda, and raise you 2 cylinders!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

VCM ( Variable Cylinder Management ) is fuel-saving technology that automatically deactivates 1/3 or 1/2 of the cylinders , according to the driving conditions. This saves fuel and lowers emissions.

Now I’m going to have to figure out how that engine works as I’ve never seen one quite like that before.

Flathead engine designs were the standard for American cars up until the early 50's. The valves are next to the cylinder and push up from below, with the cam acting directly on the valve. They fell out of use because they don’t breathe well as the air has to take a torturous path through, and V configuration flatheads can have heat issues as the exhaust runs along the intake and in the center of the V. They’re also all low compression because you always have that bit of negative space above the valve that the piston doesn’t act on.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s called a flathead because the heads only exist to contain the explosion and are usually just flat slabs of metal with maybe some coolant passages.
